Nestled on 8.34 acres of a park-like setting in the quiet small town of Farmington, Iowa this unique property is the former home of Harmony Middle School, which the county stopped using as a school in 2008.
Built in 1956 the all-brick building has 12 former classrooms that could be converted to bedrooms or workspaces, an office area, two locker rooms (new in 2004), two additional large bathrooms (with a half bath in the office), a boiler room, a full gymnasium with six basketball hoops (including one that is retractable), a working scoreboard, a stage in the gym area, a cafeteria area, a kitchen area (appliances have been removed), and 10 foot-wide hallways with some lockers still intact. There are two unfinished basement areas as well. The floors are concrete throughout most of the building, with some areas with carpeting, and the gym floor with maple flooring.
Structurally the building is in excellent condition with one foot-thick exterior walls and large windows. There are no electrical issues and only minor plumbing issues (the pipes that take water from the boiler room to the main area of the building were cut years ago and have never been reconnected). The boiler is LP (liquid petroleum) gas but does not work and will need to be replaced to heat most of the building; there are separate heat pumps above the locker rooms and in the office area.
The large yard is filled with mature trees including oak, red maple, and northern white pine and has a gazebo and outdoor basketball court with six hoops. Before being a school this was a city park and still retains the look and feel of a park.
There is also a fruit-bearing peach tree in the yard that produces extremely sweet and juicy peaches.
